Tooth Extractions Procedure

If you have a tooth that is severely decaying or broken beyond repair, then you may need an extraction. But there is no need to worry. Dr. Goodling, right here in Wilmington, provides comfortable and reliable tooth extractions. Even better, he can fit you with a beautiful new tooth after your extraction.

Often, we can complete a tooth extraction with a local anesthetic instead of administering nitrous oxide. However, we understand that many of our patients would prefer sedation dentistry when getting a tooth extraction. Therefore, we offer both nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, and anti-anxiety medications for our patients who have dental anxiety.

After giving you laughing gas or numbing the area with a local anesthetic, we will gently and swiftly remove your tooth. Though an extraction may sound like a scary procedure, it is quick, easy, and comfortable.

Healing and Recovery

Before you see us for tooth extraction, we’ll give you an outline of what you should expect. This will help remind you to stock your fridge with soft foods and keep over-the-counter medications on hand.

After your procedure, we’ll send you home prepared to take care of your teeth. Until the anesthesia wears off, you’ll want to stick to liquids. This will help prevent any undue harm to your gums or teeth. After your anesthesia wears off, you should limit your diet to soft foods for several days.

Additionally, we want to make sure you are taking good care of your teeth. Two days after your procedure, you should be able to brush your teeth and get back to a normal oral hygiene routine. Within those two days, you should still brush your teeth, but only in the areas that are far from your extraction site.

When your mouth feels normal again, you should come back to see us about tooth replacements. We offer both dentures and dental implants to fit your lifestyle and budget.

Emergency Dentistry

You can’t always predict when you’ll break a tooth. But, you can rely on your dentist to be available when you need him. Dr. Goodling commits his practice to help patients in emergency dental situations. In fact, if you are in extreme pain, we will always see you the very same day to help you and your smile.
